Get Carter… Then get some more.

A few years ago, Mike Seeger came to UCLA for a festival honoring the famed Ash Grove folk music club. While he was there I was lucky enough to get a lesson in Maybelle Carter-style picking from him.

Recently, my friend Wyatt Stone asked me to volunteer as an emcee at the California Traditional Music Society’s Solstice Festival. One of the acts on my stage was Ginny Hawker and Tracy Schwarz. Ginny is a wonderful singer of traditional Appalachian songs and a great interpreter of old country numbers as well as those written by her good friend, the late Hazel Dickens. Tracy was one-third of The New Lost City Ramblers along with Mike Seeger. He and Ginny performed a Carter Family number during their set with Tracy picking the guitar in the style of “Ma” Maybelle Carter.  After the show I cornered Tracy and asked him for a few pointers on my Carter Family picking. He was gracious enough to oblige and now I have been fortunate enough to get pointers on my Carter Family playing from two of the New Lost City Ramblers.

Here’s a clip of Ginny Hawker & Tracy Schwarz along with third Rambler, John Cohen performing “Gold Watch and Chain.”

One Response to Get Carter… Then get some more.

  1. Very neat, Doug! Glad to hear that you helped support Wyatt and the local community. Advice on Carter Family picking is a good thing to collect.
